What you should know about weeds as winter approaches in Boise, Nampa, Meridian, and Eagle, Idaho

Weeds are resilient and amazing plants when you think about it.  Weeds tend to grow and reproduce much quicker than the plants we desire – because they are highly adaptable and easily spread.  Weeds can be brought to our yard by wind currents or through irrigation water.  They can be carried onto our property by animals, hay/straw bales, or even the tires on our vehicles.

Weeds cause more loss to farmers than insects, disease, or critters that graze on their crops.  And weeds are the most common complaint that we hear about in the lawn care industry, especially as weeds develop more and more resistance to common weed control products.
Many weeds are annuals, which means they germinate, grow to maturity, and die in less than a year’s time.  Since annuals die each year, that means they must reproduce from seed in order to ensure their survival.  Winter annuals germinate in the late summer/early fall and then survive the cold of winter and grow quickly in the spring.  Many weeds can produce several thousand seeds each year which means they will be even more prolific the next year unless a remedy is found.
So what can you do to reduce weeds in your lawn?  You can apply a pre-emergent to keep weed seeds from germinating which will definitely reduce weed growth.  But the number one remedy to a weed filled lawn – is to grow a healthy dense grass.  Trying to manage weeds without building a healthy lawn is an impossible task.
