It’s October and the question that we commonly hear at this time of year is, when should we stop mowing our lawn?
You may be tempted to stop mowing once your irrigation water has been shut off and your sprinklers winterized. But don’t put away the mower just yet! Retiring your lawn mower too early can be unhealthy for turf.
Most lawns in the Treasure Valley are Kentucky Blue Grass, which is a cool season grass. Cool season grasses go through a period of rejuvenation and growth in the fall as the weather cools. If you stop mowing mid-October, you could end up with fairly long grass before winter sets in. Long grass mats easier and makes it more susceptible to winter kill and promotes snow mold.
It is recommended that you continue to mow at least through the end of October, dropping your mowing height from the summer 3 inches to a short 1.5 – 2 inch cut for your final mowing. This is vital in keeping your grass healthy in the dormant stage and will promote a faster green lawn in the spring.
It is also important to remember as you cut your lawn in the fall is to make sure that your mower blades are sharp. A clean cut is especially important for the health of your lawn. When the mower blades are dull they actually pull at the grass and leave a serrated edge that makes the grass more vulnerable to lawn diseases.
