The benefits of mulching your fall leaves in Boise, Nampa, Meridian, and Eagle, Idaho

Should you rake and remove or mow and leave?  When it comes to falling leaves, maybe you never knew you had a choice.  Many of us were brought up to believe that you should always rake your leaves and remove them from your lawn because not only was it “tidier” but better for your grass.  But science is telling us that our lawns could actually benefit from the annual input that the autumnal leaves bring.

But won’t the leaves smother and kill the grass?  Well yes, excessive accumulation of leaves that are left in thick piles throughout the winter, can kill your grass.  But fallen leaves can also provide an additional layer of beneficial organic material that will ultimately compost into much needed nutrients for your lawn and plants.  As noted by National Wildlife Federation Naturalist David Mizejewski, “Fallen leaves offer a double benefit. Leaves form a natural mulch that helps suppress weeds and fertilizes the soil as it breaks down.  According to a Michigan State study, mulching leaves into a lawn will actually reduce dandelions by 60%.

In order to get the best benefit from your leaves and avoid harming your lawn, it is recommended that you actually mow over the fallen leaves to turn them into smaller pieces.  A mulching mower will make easy work of the leaves, but if you don’t have one any mower will do.   First you will need to rake or blow leaves from your beds into your lawn, then run over the leaves a few times with the mower to chop them into small pieces.  Lightly rake the chopped leaves into a pile and mow that pile a few more times.  You can then rake the leaf mulch into the lawn.

You can also use this leaf compost as a mulch around your trees and flower beds.  Covering your garden beds with a thick mulch in the fall is a simple and effective way to build nutrients in the soil to feed your plants and trees.

Remember that fall is a great time to address any issues you might be having with your lawn as well as start an organic lawn care program to feed your lawn before winter.

The importance of winterizing your sprinkler system in Boise, Nampa, Meridian, and Eagle, Idaho

As summer winds down and the weather cools, our thoughts turn to the fast approaching winter.  Last year’s unprecedented snowfall in the Treasure Valley
is said to be duplicated this year.  And as a company, we saw many costly issues with sprinkler lines that were caused from irrigation systems not being blown out correctly or even not being blown out all. With that in mind, we want to focus today on the importance of winterizing your sprinkler system.

Whenever your sprinkler system is used, some water is always left in the pipes, even if you drain your system.  This water becomes an issue when temperatures drop below freezing.  The freezing and expanding of the water can then lead to cracked pipes and fittings. Frozen water in the system can also affect the valves and anti-siphon devises which are expensive to repair and replace.  Metal parts are especially vulnerable to the effects of alternately freezing and thawing over time.

To prevent damage, we recommend a sprinkler blow-out.  A “blow-out” consists of sending pressurized air through the system to ensure that any leftover water is removed.  Failing to winterize your sprinkler system can result in severe damage not only to your sprinkler system but potentially with your property, especially your lawn, due to flowing.

At Organic Solutions! Inc., we urge you to hire a trained professional to winterize your irrigation system to ensure that it is done properly.  We are in the process of scheduling for sprinkler blow-outs and encourage you to contact us and get on the calendar before it is too late.

Preventing Spring weeds in the Fall in Boise, Nampa, Meridian, and Eagle, Idaho

One of the preventative lawn care treatments that we provide to our customers in the Treasure Valley is fall pre-emergent weed control.  Applying a fall pre-emergent is a great way to prevent pesky weeds from appearing in your lawn in the spring.
There are many variety of weeds that germinate in the fall, survive the winter, and actively grow in spring. Which means that the only preventive means of ridding your turf of invasive weeds such as henbit, annual bluegrass, chickweed, corn speedwell and lawn burrweed (or spurweed), thistle, dandelion, and clover is the application of a fall pre-emergent.
Pre-emergent herbicides stop weeds before they sprout by prohibiting weed seeds from germinating.   The timing of a pre-emergent application in the late summer, early fall is critical because once weeds appear in your lawn, it is too late.

As Benjamin Franklin once said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”  At Organic Solutions! Inc., we are experts in preventing problem weeds before they appear in your lawn. If you would like to get the full benefit of a fall pre-emergent, contact us today to get on the schedule.

Proper lawn mower maintenance is important for your mower and your grass in Boise, Nampa, Eagle, and Meridian, Idaho

Lawn mowers can really take a beating, yet many people neglect to care for their mower until something breaks.  Preventative maintenance can go a long way to keep your mower running smoothly all season long.  With this in mind we’ve compiled some maintenance tips that will help you have a better cut as well as extend the life of your mower.

Check the air filter – Having a dirty air filter can create all kinds of issues such as making the engine run rich which can foul a plug.  Also if your filter is torn it can allow debris into the cylinder which can create some expensive problems with our mower.
Clean the mower deck after each mow – Grass can collect under the deck and disrupt airflow which will affect the quality of your cut.  Accumulated grass can also contribute to rusting.
Sharpen mower blades – dull blades tear grass which is more stressful to your turf than a clean cut which makes it more susceptible to weeds and disease.  A clean cut always looks better as well so you should sharpen your blades at least 3 times during the year.
Check tire pressure – Low tire pressure not only affects your steering but also the quality of your cut.  If you notice your lawn mower deck is uneven it’s a good possibility that your tire pressure is uneven.
Use quality fuel – Make sure that you buy top quality and if possible alcohol free fuel.  Alcohol in the gas can draw water through the vents and bring it into your gas tank, which can cause numerous issues if it gets into your fuel system.  Make sure you store your gas properly and keep your mower out of the elements to reduce the risk of water and rust.
Run engine at proper RPMs – Most lawn mowers today are meant to be ran at full throttle which helps to pull enough air to cool the motor and keep the blades turning at the right speed.  Running your mower slower will labor the engine and lower the blade tip speed which will impact the quality of your cut.
Cut grass at proper height – If you have neglected to mow and the lawn is twice as tall as normal, make sure that you adjust the deck to account for the taller grass.  The general rule for grass is to never cut more than half the blade when you mow. This means that if your grass is 10” high, you should cut at 5”.  More than this will labor your engine.
When you invest in a lawn mower, you want to ensure that it lasts as long as possible.  Proper maintenance is the first step in keeping your lawn mower running well and cutting your lawn with ease.  If you notice your mower isn’t running right, don’t wait to have it repaired, inaction or the wrong action can be costly.

Many people don’t have the time to maintain their lawns as well as their lawn equipment.  At Organic Solutions! Inc., we can provide weekly mowing and trimming service that takes the hassle out of having a beautiful yard all season long.  Give us a call for a free estimate, 208-884-8986

Why late summer fertilization is critical to your grass in Boise, Nampa, Eagle, and Meridian, Idaho

It is September in the Treasure Valley and an excellent time to fertilize your lawn.  The summer heat has been stressful for your turf leaving it vulnerable to weeds and insects.  Feeding your lawn now in the late summer has many advantages.
The first advantage for fertilizing in the late summer is that it will strengthen it to protect against weeds and insects as well as any other stressors such as foot traffic.  The second advantage to a late summer fertilization is that the cooler weather will produce new root growth and the nutrients from the fertilizer will help to feed the growth which will decrease the stress as it tries to recover and re-grow from the damage caused by the high summer temperatures.
Proper fertilization and weed control will not only improve the color, growth, and health of your lawn; it will also help your lawn be in the best possible shape to survive the coming winter.
